Access to clean and safe drinking water continues to be a challenge for many communities in the country. Such communities rely on surface water, i.e. stream, rivers and ponds and at other times, they have wells, manual and mechanized boreholes. In such communities, the quality of water is not ideal for human consumption. The lack of choice means that community members have to consume infested, unclean water, exposing them to water borne diseases.
In our engagements and business, we have identified communities with various challenges with accessing clean and safe water. Some communities have access to poor quality water, others do not have access to water at all and have to travel long distances for water, which is usually very poor in quality. In recent times, the menace of Galamsey and sand winning has worsened the situation.
Some communities have benefited from government interventions and from corporate institutions and individuals who have sponsored and executed the provision of water sources. In many places, the projects have failed to serve the communities due to a lack of maintenance and technical knowhow to manage the projects. Very little capacity has been built among members in the communities to manage and maintain such projects.
